Global Talent
Visa

A Global Talent visa allows recognised leaders and potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology to work in the UK. It offers flexibility to work for employers, undertake self-employment and develop professional projects.

At a glance

Who it is for: Applicants aged 18 or over with qualifying talent, promise or a listed prestigious prize.
Employer sponsorship: Not required.

Length of stay: Up to five years per application, with extensions available.

Settlement: Potentially after three or five years, depending on the qualifying category.

Dependants: Eligible partners and children may apply.

Main eligibility requirements

You normally need endorsement from the Home Office-approved body responsible for your field. You must demonstrate the level of achievement or potential required for exceptional talent or exceptional promise.

Alternatively, a person who is the named recipient of a prize expressly listed in Appendix Global Talent: Prestigious Prizes may apply without endorsement. An unlisted award, or an award to an organisation with which you are associated, does not automatically qualify.

For an initial application based on endorsement, the visa application must normally be made within three months of the endorsement letter. The endorsement or qualifying prize must remain valid. You must also meet suitability and any relevant TB or switching requirements.

English and financial requirements

There is no English language test or fixed maintenance-funds requirement for initial Global Talent permission. There is also no general minimum salary or requirement to hold a sponsored job offer. Application fees and the healthcare surcharge normally apply.

Extension and settlement

For an extension, you normally need evidence that you earned money in the UK during your previous permission in the field connected to your endorsement or prize.

Settlement requires the appropriate three- or five-year qualifying period, qualifying earnings, continuous residence and other relevant conditions. The shorter period depends on the endorsement category or qualifying prize; it is not available to every applicant. Partners generally have their own five-year qualifying period.

Current rules and forthcoming changes

Endorsement requirements differ between disciplines. The current rules and prestigious-prize list should be checked against the applicant's exact field and award.

From 26 March 2027, the English requirement for Global Talent settlement increases to B2, subject to exemptions. This does not introduce an English test for the initial Global Talent visa.

Evidence commonly required

Passport; endorsement or qualifying-prize evidence; professional CV; recommendation letters and a portfolio appropriate to the endorsement category. Relevant evidence may include publications, exhibitions, awards, commercial achievements, research appointments or grants. TB and family documents may also be required.

Application process

1. Identify the correct endorsement or prize pathway.
2. Prepare the discipline-specific evidence and obtain endorsement where needed.
3. Submit the visa application, pay the applicable charges and complete identity checks.
4. Keep records of qualifying UK earnings and absences for future applications.

Common issues

A strong CV alone may not satisfy the endorsement criteria. The evidence must meet the relevant category, recommendation and assessment requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change employers?

Yes. Global Talent permission is not tied to one sponsoring employer.

Do all applicants qualify for settlement after three years?

No. Some categories require five years, and all relevant settlement conditions must be met.
