UK Parent Visa

A UK Parent Visa allows you to live in the UK to care for your child if your child is a British or Irish citizen, is settled in the UK, or has lived there continuously for 7 years.

Key requirements
  • Child’s status: Your child must be under 18 when you first apply, live in the UK, and hold British citizenship, settled status, or pre-settled status.
  • Relationship status: You must not be in a relationship with the child’s other parent, and you must have sole or shared parental responsibility.
  • Active role and English: You must prove you take an active role in your child’s upbringing and plan to continue doing so, and you must meet the basic English language requirement (normally CEFR level A1 in speaking and listening) unless exempt.
Mother And Child

UK Parent Visa Duration and settlement

Initial stay: Typically granted for 2 years and 9 months (if applying online or from abroad) or 30 months.

Extensions: You can usually extend your Parent Visa for a further 30 months if you continue to meet the route requirements. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR): After 5 years on the parent route, you may be able to apply for settlement if you still meet the relationship, care, financial and suitability rules.

For clear guidance, it helps to know where you are applying from (inside or outside the UK) and your child’s citizenship status and age. Please contact Meridian Immigration Services to discuss your Parent Visa options in more detail.
